Announcing the 2026 McCullough Fellowship program! Applications are due on March 2, 2026. Students from all disciplines are invited to apply for summer research funding and support on sustainability issues through the McCullough Fellowship. Students work with a faculty mentor and a community partner organization and are paid for their research time, travel, and equipment. Creative projects with a research and writing component are encouraged.

Info sessions for all interested faculty, students, and community sponsors will be held in the Office of Sustainability, Karpen Hall 006 on:

Tuesday, January 20th, 2026, 1:30-2:30 PM

Monday, January 26th, 2026, 12-1 PM

Students must attend an information session to apply. No commitment is necessary at this time, but if you are interested and/or would like more information, please RSVP for an info session at https://forms.gle/gGPipGvfjB3N2Xvr5

Summer research is followed by a fall colloquium that provides fellows with academic support while they are writing and publishing their paper in Capstone, The UNC Asheville Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship and presenting their work at the UNCA Symposium and other conferences.

Students and faculty can work together to identify potential projects or students may independently seek mentors to support their proposals. You do not need to have a project and/or research student in mind — I will work with faculty and/or students to identify a good team, including a potential community sponsor.

Lists of McCullough Fellows’ research projects from 2016-2025, can be found under “The Fellowship” tab on the McCullough Institute website.
